Construction Academy Helps Hone Skills of Fifers

A group of young unemployed Fifers have been improving their chances of finding work, thanks to a Fife Council Skills Academy.

The five week Fife Construction Sector Academy was organised by the council in partnership with Fife College, the Department of Work and Pensions and Kingdom Housing.

It forms part of the on-going work as part of the Fife Youth Job Contract, the council’s £5 million investment to address high levels of unemployment for Fifers aged 16-24.

This academy has provided 13 young people the opportunity to learn skills in a range of different trades including painting and decorating, carpentry, joinery, brick work and trowel trades and health and safety training too.

The group will also start work experience with various businesses throughout Fife to help them apply for jobs and to become more confident in interviews.

Those who took part were presented with certificates to mark their achievements at an event at Adam Smith Theatre on Friday 25 April.

Councillor Tony Martin, Fife Council’s Youth Ambassador said: “It was great to meet the group and hear about the skills they’ve already gained as part of this initiative.

“I hope it’s helped them to develop an understanding and increase motivation to meet the recruitment standard of construction employers who are planning to recruit.

“I wish them well with their work experience and all the best in their future careers.”

Depute Council Leader Lesley Laird, spokesperson for Business and Planning added: “Competition is fierce for every opportunity out there and having the right skills and experience for the job is vital. This intensive five week programme will help give this group the confidence to apply for construction industry jobs and will hopefully lead to employment.

“By investing in the workforce of the future the council is helping the local economy too by ensuring job applicants have what they’re looking for to enhance their business.”
